A pandemic hits the U.S. and spreads rapidly, leaving a wake of death, suffering and economic disaster in its wake. Americans are frustrated with the handling of the pandemic by their leaders and public health authorities.

This may sound like a description of what we're experiencing in 2020, but it's also the history of 1918. Historian Nancy Bristow researched and presents an in-depth look at this epic period in her 2017 book, American Pandemic: Lost Worlds of the 1918 Influenza Epidemic.

Nancy's work delves into the social and cultural history of the epidemic and how it was mis-named "The Spanish Flu". Her book demonstrates how the flu was not an indiscriminate scourge, but how key decisions and societal factors shaped the experience of the pandemic.

In this author interview, Joan Gregerson and Nancy Bristow will explore parallels between the slowly unfolding dual crises of pandemics and climate change. Nancy will share insights into vital lessons from 2018 that are extremely pertinent for today.

Nancy Bristow is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where she is also a member of the leadership team of the Race and Pedagogy Institute and a founding member of the African American Studies Program.

In addition to the American Pandemic, Nancy is the author of Making Men Moral: Social Engineering during the Great War.

Her forthcoming book Steeped in the Blood of Racism: Black Power, Law and Order, and the 1970 Shootings at Jackson State College is due out in May 2020. Nancy's books are available from Oxford University Press (OUP) and other booksellers.
