Session & Speaker Overview

Joan spent decades doing everything she could to help protect the environment. But, sadly, she failed. Again and again she was unable to make much of an impact, whether in her work as an energy efficiency engineer and sustainability professional and trying to get people in her sphere to recycle more.

Along the way, Joan accidentally started an environmental nonprofit. The little group went on to change the course of history of the city of Longmont, Colorado. Joan moved on and started a team in her hometown, in the neighborhood where she grew up. Again, she was surprised with how much got done by regular people just getting together to tackle projects in their own communities.

In 2018, Joan founded the Green Team Academy to research, distill and share best practices for starting impactful Green Teams.

In this session, Joan shares some of the key strategies that teams can use to make a bigger impact faster, and avoid the time-sucking common pitfalls.

In 2019, Joan received the Community Builder Love This Place at the 2019 Sustainable Denver Summit for her work mentoring over 20 teams in the Green Team Accelerator Lab. Members of the Lab went on to start the Denver Compost Challenge, the Northside Sustainability Alliance and other collaborations.

Joan is the author of several books including the upcoming Climate Action Challenge book, available  July 31, 2020. Joan is the founder of Green Team Academy and offers courses, coaching and consulting to help people get together, make a difference and feel better.

Session & Speaker Overview

What is happening in this moment on Planet Earth?

Right now, approximately one-third of the human population is on lockdown due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. This pandemic is changing life is some way for nearly every person on the planet in a matter of days and weeks.

With beliefs, systems and economies crashing, with human suffering and struggle soaring, is there anything else happening here?

The silver lining may be that when our normal routines are smashed to smithereens, we have a rare opportunity to rebuild our lives and our world for a "new normal".

So, what will it be? More of the same prior to the pandemic or is this an opening?

Throughout the Summit, we'll be asking presenters and participants to tell us their take. Is this ""The Great Turning", as it's called by Joanna Macy and other spiritual ecologists.

Or will the same forces that have disconnected us from living in peace and harmony insert themselves again, with even more dire situations bound to come?
